Residents in Retirement Community Band Together

You could say a group of senior citizens took matters into their own hands in Beaufort County.

Well, as least as far as keeping their neighborhood safe goes.

Residents of a retirement community in Washington grew tired of not feeling safe walking out their front doors. So they decided to do something about it.

Three years ago, Clarence Johnson, along with several other residents in his Avon Street community, formed a neighborhood watch group with the help of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Residents we talked to say the program has been a huge success. They feel their neighborhood is safer and less of a target for loitering and property crimes.

The sheriff's office says neighborhood watch groups are among the most effective ways to reduce crime in a specific area.
