Some Embarq Retirees To Lose Health Benefits

Imagine working all your life, retiring with health benefits, then having those benefits taken away just when you need them the most.

That's what thousands of retirees from the Embarq telephone company across North Carolina are dealing with. In January, Embarq will end company-sponsored healthcare coverage for its former employees who are eligible for Medicare.

Retirees gathered in New Bern Tuesday to try and figure out what to do. Some employees plan to fight the decision. Embarq officials did not return our calls seeking comment, but said in a letter to employees, the move is to help the company remain competitive.
