Record high temperatures and breezy southwest winds have prompted state foresters to ask people not to burn for the next couple of days.

The hot and windy conditions create high probabilities for wildfires. Meteorologists are also forecasting the possibilities of strong thunderstorms late Thursday into Friday.

So far this year there have been 1,329 wildfires which have burned more than 5,000 acres in the state.

If you have to burn, here are some helpful burning tips:

*Check local laws on burning. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours while others forbid it entirely and make sure to obtain a burning permit.

*Check the weather; don't burn on dry, windy days and consider alternatives to burning.

*To control the fire, you will need a source of water, a bucket and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire.

*Use precaution when using fuel products to help burn off areas.

*Monitor for local and current state burn bans that may restrict outdoor burning. Contact your fire department or county ranger to make sure you are not violating any open burning regulations.
