Suspect In Police Shooting Found Dead

Rocky Mount police say the suspect in yesterday's police shooting has been found dead.

The discovery was made this morning, in bushes behind Premier Ford on Highway 301. It happened 300 yards from where Senior Police Officer Darrell Martin was shot twice Sunday morning.

Police say the body is of 20 year old Alexander Whitaker.

At an afternoon news conference police say Whitaker was shot, but are not sure yet by whom.

Police say Martin did return fire after being shot, so it is possible one of the rounds struck Whitaker. Other possibilities are that Whitaker committed suicide or someone else shot him A gun was found near the body.

Police are still searching for two other people who ran from the traffic stop along with Whitaker.

Investigators say Officer Martin stopped the car early Sunday morning because he spotted Whitaker, whom he knew was wanted by police. As the five men were getting out of the car one at a time, Whitaker and two others ran.

Police say Whitaker shot Officer Martin twice. He is in stable condition at a local hospital.

Rocky Mount police say they will know more after an autopsy is performed on Whitaker's body.

Because this involved a police shooting, the State Bureau Of Investigation is conducting the probe.
