A Rocky Mount police officer is recovering as the manhunt continues for the person who shot the officer.

Police say it happened on Sunset Avenue near the Highway 301 overpass.

A police report says Senior Police Officer Darrell Martin was shot after he stopped a car around 3:15 am Sunday.

Police say Martin had spotted a man in a car wanted for an outstanding warrant. As the officer was having the five occupants get out of the car one at a time, three took off running--one shooting at Martin.

Authorities are now looking for 20 year old Alexander Whitaker for the attempted murder of Officer Martin.

Martin, a 13 year veteran of Rocky Mount's police department was struck twice by gunfire and is in stable condition.

Two other people in that car were arrested at the scene. Eric Harrison and Tyron Foreman are both charged with attempted murder and are currently in jail.
