According to the DOT over fifty thousand six hundred state bridges are classified as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. According to bridge maintenance engineer, reed smith, in 2005 the Grimesland bridge in Pitt county was classified as functionally obsolete. In fact, it was just shut down Wednesday for, what smith calls, extensive maintenance repairs. Smith says the bridge should be repaired and re-opened by next week. The Grimesland bridge was built in 1954 and services mostly local traffic.
