12 Arrested In Video Poker Operation

FBI agents have arrested 12 people, including two former Buncombe County sheriff's deputies, on charges involving an illegal video gambling operation.

The arrests were made in North Carolina and Florida. Eleven of those charged had their first court appearance yesterday at the federal courthouse in Asheville.

Among those appearing were former sheriff's Lieutenant Ronnie
Eugene Davis and former reserve Captain Kenneth Penland, both of
Asheville.

One person was charged in a federal court in Florida.

Video gambling became illegal in North Carolina on July First. Previously, operators had been allowed up to three machines that allowed winners up to $10 in store merchandise.

Ten of those charged worked for Henderson Amusement Company,
mostly as money-carriers and overseers.
