The ribbon was cut on a new barn Wednesday that could help a huge facility in the East host even bigger events.

The Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center in Martin County officially opened its new barn Wednesday afternoon. The new barn at the Martin County facility adds more than 150 new horse stalls to the center. That will increase the center's capacity to 456 and allow for larger horse shows.

The center was built in 1998. Last year it drew more than 5,300 horses and 13,000 people, with an estimated local economic impact of more than $4 million.

Have to agree with M.Bland on some of the issues..The center is awesome, host alot of events but what becomes of the monies???? Martin Co like alot of neighboring counties does need attention, roads, ditches, drainage...know for a fact a new 4 lane was built with an exit in Everetts and that caused problems with drainage.. water ponds up on private properties, farm land and farming is one of the most important money "bringers" in the county.....

I am curious - with all these problems you've found with the area, what are YOU DOING to help improve them? Are you yourself actually doing something to improve those flaws you stated, or just stating them? Part of the problem or part of the solution. Have you been to Ag Center and seen it's impact first hand? Been a part of it in some way? Just curious.

Most people in Martin County are VERY happy to have the Ag Center. There is some people in This County that would not be happy if they won a Million dollars...they would just complain about the taxes they have to pay. Martin County is VERY fortunate to have the Ag Center. It brings lots of dollars to this county and employees Martin County Residents. Anyone who does not think this place brings money, they need to go the the restaurnats, gas stations, Walmart and motels on weekends there is horse show in Town. We are also fortunate to have a very good and skilled staff working there...Durward Taylor, Keith Whitaker and all the other ladies and gentlemen do a outstanding job of accomadating the needs of people using the Ag Center. So a BIG thanks to all who had input in getting this building in Martin County and to the fine staff that operates it and that includes the Meeting Center too. It is used a lot for birthday parties, reunions and Etc. Thanks again SBMEAC. MC Resident
