About 25 people showed up Tuesday night to find out what what plans the Pitt County School Board school board has for Sadie Saulter Elementary School now that is will no longer operate as a K-5 school.
One possible program for the school is the Alpha Program for kids that need intervention. Some say it's a program for bad kids--but one mother says it saved her child.
Transforming the school would also mean physical changes. Option one will add 21,000 square feet and cost about 3.5 million dollars. Option two adds 28,000 square feet of space and costs about 5.6 million. Both options involve moving Alpha to Sadie Saulter--which is just fine with the current principal.
Fredonia Stewart says, "I think the Alpha program and pre-k students will definitely benefit from the facilities here. So, i'm very happy that this school is going to be a vibrant part of the community."
School officials say no decision has been made as of yet. Tuesday's feedback will be taken in consideration and a vote will be made in April.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The life span of one elementary school is officially limited, and officials are looking for input on how they'll change the building into something other than a school.
The Pitt County Board of Education will host a community forum at Sadie Saulter Elementary School in Greenville Tuesday evening. The topic: options for reconfiguring the school into a place for a Pre-K center, administrative offices and special programs. The forum starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

To Anti-Terrorist...you are right you don't lose your right to complain, if you ARE chosing to take action. My point is that if all you do is complain and don't try to better the situation at hand, then we usually call that "complaining" by a word that is much more vulgar. There are a lot of things about our school system that need to be changed and it takes people who are willing to take some action to get them changed. If you have ideas on ways to help PCS better reach all of the children no matter what school they attend, please help!
The point is AT that this article and this meeting and this debate are not about the programs you speak of. Leave it alone.
I did not say I did not have a horse in the race. Advanced education programs that were previously at Sadie were there to bolster attendance. It did not work. I don't want those programs going to yet another troubled school just to bolster attendance and place false respect on those otherwise troubled schools. I have not been informed yet where those advanced placement programs are going is not Sadie. My horse is that for my child to take advantage of those programs he would have had to go to Sadie part of the day. Those programs should have been at his school and not politically maneuverer into a school like Sadie. That is my horse. As for those that say not showing up to the meeting excludes one from having an opinion or continuing to try and make a difference, I say you are dead wrong. And Rachel, you never lose your right to voice your opinion and take action in this country. Far too many people think just because someone was voted in that we suddenly have to accept their view!
