Change In Health Insurance Could Help 10,000 More Kids

A state audit says about ten-thousand more children could receive government-sponsored health insurance.

But it requires a change in the way North Carolina processes medical claims, which the audit says would free up 16 million dollars.

For instance, the audit says claims could be processed cheaper by the state Department of Health and Human Services than by the state employee health plan office.

The report says the change in processing bills could save eight-point four million dollars a year for medical bills and nearly seven-and-a-half million dollars in prescription costs.

Health department officials would have to seek a change, but it, doesn't, appear the department will seek the change.
