Conservationists Seek Cash For Undeveloped Land

Conservationists are looking to raise money to buy up old farmland before it falls into the hands of developers who want to expand urban areas.

The trend is driven in part by the 2004 tobacco buyout that has retiring farmers looking for other uses for their land.

Officials estimate ten-thousand acres of farmland and forests are gobbled up each year by development in Wake County.

Environmental leaders are asking state lawmakers to borrow one billion dollars to preserve undeveloped land in the next five
years.

The General Assembly is also considering adding millions of dollars to a state trust fund design to distribute preservation grants.

Kurt Smith with Wake County says farmers usually have mailboxes
full of offers to buy their land.
