NC Budget Negotiators Hopeful

House and Senate budget negotiators say they hope to wrap up the spending side of a new two-year budget for state government by this weekend.

Democratic leaders in both chambers are scheduled to meet again
today to try to resolve the final differences in their respective budget proposals. A stopgap spending measure that allowed lawmakers to negotiate after the fiscal year began this month expires July 31st.

Forsyth Senator Linda Garrou says the panel has handled most of
the tough issues. Garrou says the negotiators are trying to tie up loose ends.

The negotiators have agreed to an amount they can spend, but they haven't gone into details. Tax negotiators meeting this week don't have much yet to show for their work. The full House and Senate would have to approve the deals.
