Proposed Land Transfer Tax Generating Big Spending On All Sides

There's a lot of money being spent on how to raise money to fund school construction and environmental preservation.

The target of the spending is a land transfer tax that would give local governments a new source of revenue to pay for infrastructure and land conservation. Supporters say the tax on land sales is a fair way to pay for development.

Opponents say the tax would discourage potential first-time home

Combined, four groups involved most heavily in the issue have spent more than a million dollars on advertising, polls and other efforts to push their message to the public through the first half of the year. Expense filings due this week at the Secretary of State's office show both sides have spent about the same amount of money.
