The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that the police chief in Enfield asked officers to lie for him about money that was missing for a while from an evidence bag.
Police Chief Alan Exum wouldn't talk about the allegation and remains on the job. But the Halifax County town's former assistant chief and another former officer say the chief took two-thousand-37 dollars from a sealed evidence bag in April after an arrest.
The missing money was reported to the S-B-I by one of the officers, but it was back in the bag when an agent arrived. The officer says the chief asked him to say the money never was missing.
The District Attorney asked for the state investigation in May. D-A Bill Graham had no comment while the investigation continues.
