Jury Convicts Wife In Cop's Killing; Sentence Is Life

A woman has been convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole in the shooting death of her husband, who was a Concord police officer.

Misty Witherspoon was found guilty of killing Quinn Witherspoon, who was shot in the head on September 13th, 2005, as he slept on the couch in the living room of the couple's Mooresville home.

During Friday's closing arguments, prosecutors said Misty Witherspoon killed her husband because she was afraid to tell him she squandered their money and the electricity was about to be turned off at their house. Her defense lawyer says the gun fired accidentally.

In May, Misty Witherspoon pleaded guilty to embezzlement and financial identity theft charges. Prosecutors say she stole almost 28-thousand dollars from the church where her husband was treasurer and she was his assistant. She was also accused of taking out credit cards in her sister's name.
