Eight people died in what Meteorologists called a F-3 tornado. That year-in 2006-- a total of nine people died in deadly twisters. According the National Weather Service, Tornadoes in North Carolina are common but compared to the rest of the country.
North Carolina ranks 22 for the frequency of tornadoes. Since 1950 on average, 14 tornadoes are reported a year. And waterspouts which are just tornadoes over water are more prevalent during this time of year until the end of August to the start of September.
