A mother and her fraternal twin children were killed today when an early morning fire ripped through their house in Henderson, about 40 miles north of Raleigh.
A preliminary investigation shows the three victims had tried to escape but couldn't make it past the kitchen. Relatives say 34-year-old Stacy Moore, a single mother, and her 12-year-old boy and girl, Kadarius Moore and Kadijah Moore, were killed in the blaze. Fire officials says all three died of smoke inhalation.
Officials say the fire started in the living room and may have been caused by a malfunction in a window air-conditioning unit.
The fire is not considered suspicious but is under investigation.
