House Speaker Joe Hackney will be honored for his effort to clear the chamber of the shadow of scandal.
Hackney is to receive the 2007 Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award from the National Conference of State Legislatures and the State Legislative Leaders Foundation.
He'll get the award at the conference's Legislative Summit next month in Boston. And Hackney will become the conference's president-elect.
In announcing the prize, the conference said Hackney is credited with restoring integrity to a chamber tarnished by the actions of its previous leader Jim Black.
This week, Black was sentenced this week to more than five years in federal prison for taking thousands of dollars in cash from chiropractors while promoting their agenda at the Capitol. He still faces sentencing in state court on felony counts of offering a bribe and obstructing justice.
