Heavy Rains Move Through Eastern Carolina

Strong thunderstorms swept across parts of Eastern Carolina Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy rains, lightning strikes, high winds rumbled through Martin, Washington, Beaufort, Pitt and Greene counties.

Craven County seemed to have received the worst weather. Highway 70 is now again open after being closed for a short time because of high water. Three streets remain closed in Havelock as of 6 pm. Brown Boulevard, Keith Drive and Park Lane are closed due to flooding.

Havelock's public information officer says the water was thigh deep in spots. Officials say too much rain, too quickly and a few clogged storm drains did the flooding trick.

Live Doppler 7 estimates the Havelock area received between four and five inches of rain.
