Beaufort, NC - A retired pregnant race horse was shot and killed, and now lawmen are asking for your help in tracking the shooter.
Carteret County deputies say someone shot "Breeze" in the head between Sunday and Monday at the owner's property on Taylor Farm Road, outside of Beaufort in Carteret County on the North Carolina coast.
The horse's owner, Elizabeth Loftin, says the horse was worth approximately $30,000.
Detectives say they believe that the horse was specifically targeted and the person who shot her meant to kill her.
Carteret County Investigators say they "are seeking any information that may help lead to the arrest for the person or persons responsible for the senseless shooting and killing of a retired pregnant race horse."
Investigators were back on the scene Tuesday searching for evidence.
North Carolina General Statute 14-360 states that any person who shall “maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat, disfigure, poison, or kill” any animal shall be guilty of a Class I felony which is punishable by a maximum of sentence of 15 months in prison."
Anyone with information in this case is eligible for a cash reward by either calling Crime Stoppers at (252) 726-INFO or emailing crimetips@carteretcountygov.org.

Hi Elizabeth! So sorry to hear about this. The poor horse, what where they thinking?? I hope they find out who did this and punish them to the full extent of the law. Take care Cuz!! G
hi i I'm the owner of Breeze And no she was not insured and there was no amount of money that i would of ever taken for her. She was my girl just as important to me as if she had been a human child. Whoever did this has impacted my life forever. Because knowing that someone out there hated me enough to do such a horrible thing to a perfectly innocent animal. There are no words to explain how i feel. I can tell you i was in the hospital for two weeks as a result of this. Ive had horses since i was 8 years old and all i pray for now is for somone out there who really loves horses to call me at 252-269-7293 and take the rest of my horses to a loving safe home. Thank You
It was one of the horses with a red tarp.
