Police say they caught two people stealing donated items from the Salvation Army.

Thomas Seymour, Sr. and Carolyn Doss, both of New Bern, were charged with felony breaking and entering and felony larceny.

New Bern police say early Saturday morning a patrol officer saw a couple take items from the Salvation Army's donation shed and load them into a vehicle that was backed up to the building. When the two saw the officer, police say they began putting the items back into the shed.

Officers recovered clothing, shoes, flower arrangements and an assortment of other donated items from the suspects' vehicle.

Doss who also had an outstanding warrant for food stamp fraud, was placed in the Craven County jail under a total $4,000 bond for all the charges. Seymour also had warrants from Pamlico County and criminal summonses for worthless checks. He was placed in the Craven County jail under a $1,000 bond.

Anon Feb 9, 12:13am: The reason it costs is because running the stores costs. I'm happy to say I've shopped at Salvation Army and Goodwill both most of my life when I needed to. They're able to provide items at a much lower price than when they were new (and sometimes new items too), because they are donated... but they still have to pay the lease, light bill, and employee wages - especially since the 3 hots and a cot compensation went out the window quite a while back (newsflash, even that would cost someone something).

Oops! I reread the article and Ms. Doss is accused of the Food Stamp fraud; my mistake. He wrote the worthless checks. None of that helps their case, I know. They are just a minor, tiny speck of society that does this sort of thing. I do not condone it at all. However, I do have compassion, and it would be nice if they had looked for a way to get help without being dishonest.
