Cowell Says She'll Run For State Treasurer

State senator Janet Cowell says she plans to run for state treasurer.

The Democratic senator from Wake County says her financial education and work history make her highly qualified for the post.

The treasurer's largest responsibility is overseeing North Carolina's 74 billion dollar public pension funds for an estimated 700-thousand state employees. The treasurer also manages the state's debt and serves on other state boards and commissions.

Current treasurer Richard Moore is running for governor in 2008, leaving his seat vacant.

Raleigh businessman Chris Mintz has already announced his plans to seek the Democratic nomination.
