Certain Antidepressants May Help Stroke Patients
Taking antidepressants after suffering a stroke may help patients recover more of their memory.

Researchers at the University of Iowa studied over 100 stroke survivors.
One-third took a problem solving class, another third took a placebo pill, and the remaining participants took the antidepressant Lexapro for 12 weeks.
They found those taking the antidepressant scored higher on tests that looked at cognitive function and memory. They say certain antidepressants cause changes in brain structure, that don't affect behavior, but may improve verbal and visual memory.
Lexapro belongs to a class of drugs called SSRIS. Researchers are planning more studies to see if the entire class has a benefit.
