The July 4th holiday was a somber one in Martin County as rescuers searched for a man who fell off a boat Wednesday afternoon.
Martin County Sheriff Dan Gibbs tells WITN 7 News that four people were fishing on a boat in a private pond near Everetts. The sheriff says one of the people, a 32-year old man, fell overboard.
Other people on the boat tossed an oar to the man, but he couldn't grab it. The sheriff says the man's brother also tried to rescue him.
A dive team from Beaufort County searched the pond until midnight, but did not find the body.
The sheriff says divers will be back out to the pond Thursday afternoon to continue searching.
