One wildfire in North Carolina's mountains has grown to about 4,500 acres since last week, when the fire had scorched more than 2,700 acres in Pisgah National Forest.
Officials say that the Shortoff Mountain fire had consumed 4,517 acres in Linville Gorge. Two other fires that are contained bring the total Pisgah forest land burned to 5,400 acres.
The U.S. Forest Service says the fires were started June 8 by lightning.
