A Wayne County man with a criminal past died Wednesday morning after he was tasered by deputies.

Deputies say they tasered Joe Spruill of Goldsboro after responding to a fight and a possible assault by pointing a gun near Highway 111 south and Dollardtown Road.

Spruill's family tells WITN News that his son had a heart condition.

Authorities say the 33-year-old Spruill began resisting deputies as they were taking him into custody for disorderly conduct. They say Deputy Martin Mcalduff used his taser on Spruill.

Deputies say Spruill continued to be uncooperative and they contacted Wayne County Emergency Services, which is standard procedure after a tasing. They say as the ambulance was approaching, Spruill became unresponsive and was pronounced dead by EMS workers.

Deputy Mcalduff has been placed on administrative office duty pending the results of the investigation.

Spruill's father said his son was hospitalized last month for heart problems. Joe Spruill Sr. said his son was still on medication for his condition.

Department of Correction records show Spruill was on probation for reckless driving and speeding to elude arrest. His prior convictions include maintaining a place for controlled substances, assault, selling schedule II narcotics, and possession of schedule VI narcotics.

The SBI is investigating the death of a man after he was tasered by a Wayne County deputy sheriff.

Authorities say it happened around 6:30 a.m. on Dollardtown Road.

The SBI confirms they're investigating the taser death at the request of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Wayne County dispatch does confirm there was a call around 5:30 a.m. in reference to a fight in the Dollardtown Road area.
