Prosecutors in an Onslow County murder case say they had no choice but to accept a plea deal after a witness refused to testify.
John Mitchell was originally charged with first degree murder in the June 2005 death of his neighbor, Amy Greene of Sneads Ferry. Prosecutors say Mitchell admitted to an inmate that he killed Greene. When that inmate refused to testify Thursday, prosecutors accepted Mitchell's plea to second degree murder.
He will spend a minimum of 15 to a maximum of 19 years in prison.
