One Eastern Carolina architect is trying to figure out how to get to Haiti and put his skills to use.

Greenville Architect Jimmy Hite is no stranger to Haiti.

Back in 2004 he helped design and build the country's first 4-year nursing school.

That nursing school is one of the only structures still standing in the town of Leogane, about 20-miles west of Port-au-Prince.

Because the local hospital is not usable, the nursing school has been converted into a hospital and that's where patients are being treated.

Hite says he needs to get to Haiti, survey the damage, and see what can be done to get the school back up and running as soon as possible.

As a past student of East Carolina University School of Nursing, it is my desire to encourage all Nursing schools of North Carolina to help in the rebuilding of this nursing school and also the hospitals damaged. We are all brothers and sisters in nursing and the healthcare professions. It is also time for much prayer, as God helps us rebuild and restore Haiti. Be Healthy Ministries,Inc

It's always interesting to see how many people can't grasp a simple concept. Fabulous that a building is standing, great work, but it wasn't "fortunate". It was intentionally built well - kudos because it needed to be! I am all for that. How much further away medical attention would be would not be an issue however if there were another building standing with it too. Easy to understand. Go ahead and have a party with your insults if you want and ignore the obvious. Oh yeah and, "blindly care for the injured"? Please explain blindly. They're getting an education (which is great!) so I don't think that qualifies as blind. At least I should hope not.

Somebody must have paid him a chunk of change to design a earthquake resistant building in the midst of all those ramble shacks.
