Hanesbrands says it will cut 53-hundred jobs and close nine sewing and assembly operations in five countries.
The Winston-Salem underwear and apparel manufacturer says most of the layoffs will be in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Other layoffs will occur in Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico. Seventy jobs will be cut in Statesville.
Hanesbrands says it's moving production to lower-cost operations in Asia and Central America. Another 350 management and administration positions also will be cut.
Hanesbrands says the closings are part of an ongoing restructuring effort to make its business leaner and more profitable. The company says the restructuring will cost about 42 million dollars.
