Firefighters in Jacksonville had to battle the blazing temperatures as well as the flames Monday.
At a fire Monday night at Cheezburgerz Bar and Grill on Highway 17, forty firefighters had to endure the 90 degree temperatures, plus humidity, as they entered a building topping out at over 800 degrees. Fire officials say in these extreme conditions, firefighters work 15-20 minutes at a time, taking frequent breaks and drinking plenty of water. According to the United States Fire Administration, over 44 percent of firefighters die from heart attacks from the heat.
Firefighters say the heat and heart attacks are probably the most dangerous part of their job, other than structural collapse.
