There's a hearing set for Thursday to consider removing Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong from office before his resignation takes effect.
As of Monday, Nifong's chief investigator is no longer on the job. An administrative assistant in Nifong's office says Linwood Wilson's last day was today.
Wilson was hired in December 2005 to help find people accused of writing worthless checks. In December, he conducted a key interview with the accuser in the lacrosse case that led Nifong to drop rape charges.
In that interview, the accuser contradicted several details of her previous statements. Defense attorneys called the interview a last-gasp effort by Nifong's office to keep the case alive by seeking a version of the accuser's story that fit other evidence.
