A memorial service was held Saturday, aboard New River Air Station in Jacksonville, to celebrate the memory of 22 service members whose lives were lost on this day, 40 years ago in 1967. Dozens of people including many survivors, came together to look back on a tragic day 40 years ago -- when 2 helicopters collided directly above the flightline at the air station -- taking the lives of 22 service members, and injuring 13 others. Survivors say, when it happened, many of them just thought it was simply a mechnical problem, -- but in actuality as one helicopter was descending on the landing zone, another came up underneath, striking its bottom, , cutting the tail end off.
