State officials have approved more time to clean up the swamp. The state suspects a former employee at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport dumped at least 300-thousand gallons of sludge into a Scotland County swamp. That's how much of the sludge has been pumped from the wetlands so far.
State officials believe the sludge was pumped from the airport's wastewater treatment plant into nearby wetlands over several months
to save money.
The state's Division of Water Quality has already cited the airport with nearly 100-thousand-dollars in fines. The airport has appealed.
Cleanup of the swamp started in April and failed to meet a May 25th deadline. The state has now extended that deadline to July 16th.
