Smashing Pumpkins' Return Puts Asheville On Music Map

The Smashing Pumpkins have reunited after seven years, and the alternative rock band will start Saturday in Asheville.

The Orange Peel has a capacity of 942 people. The Grammy Award-winning band is returning to the United States for a nine-show run. Asheville residents hope the concerts put the town on the music map.

Mike Rangel of the Asheville Brewing Company near the Orange Peel says the concerts will put Asheville in the league with major music venues.

Promoter Ashley Capps says the band wanted to play The Orange
Peel. The shows are the biggest event in the club's history.

The Smashing Pumpkins sold millions of albums and won two Grammy Awards before breaking up in 2000. The band's last so-called "residency" was a four-show stint in Chicago in 1994.
