A missing Beaufort County youngster has been found safe and the Amber Alert issued for her has been cancelled. Authorities say her father has been taken into custody in South Carolina.
Manning, South Carolina police chief Blair Shaffer tells WITN News that Alexis Cartwright was found in a CVS Pharmacy, just a few blocks from their police station around 3:00 p.m.
Blair says a citizen recognized the two and called police. He said the child's father used his debit card at the pharmacy, and that alerted the FBI. When the FBI called Manning police they already had them in custody.
Chief Shaffer says Alexis Cartwright is being checked out at a local hospital, while her father is in the county jail. He says the two had been staying in a nearby motel for the past two days. Manning is along I-95.
Virginia authorities say they have charged the father with abduction and child neglect. Cartwright will be held on a federal warrant and is scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday.
Previous Story
North Carolina has issued an Amber Alert, three days after a Beaufort County youngster was allegedly abducted by her father.
But authorities in another state now say Alexis Cartwright may be in South Carolina.
The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division says Alexis Cartwright may be in Georgetown, that's near Myrtle Beach.
Virginia authorities say the 11-year-old was taken from a hospital in New Kent County by her father, Lemuel Cartwright. The girl was under D.S.S. custody and a felony warrant has been issued for her father.
At first authorities believed the two were headed to their home in Bath.
North Carolina Crime Control & Public Safety says there was a delay in issuing the Amber Alert because they did not have enough information from Virginia authorities.
Previous Story
Virginia authorities say they have issued a felony warrant for a Beaufort County man who they say abducted his 11-year-old daughter Sunday from a hospital.
Virginia State Police say Alexis Cartwright was last seen Sunday at the Cumberland Children's Hospital in New Kent County. That's about 35 miles east of Richmond.
The FBI and local authorities here in Eastern Carolina are also on the lookout for the child who may be in danger.
Police say the 11-year-old from Beaufort County was taken by her father, who is possibly driving a blue 1993 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck with North Carolina tags XYZ-8450.
Police say they may be en route to Bath.
Lt. Chris Hamlet with the New Kent County Sheriff's Office says the girl was in Beaufort County Department of Social Service custody, and was at the Virginia hospital for diabetes treatment.
Lemuel Cartwright is described as a white man, 55 years, 6'7" tall, with brown eyes and hair.
Alexis was wearing a blue "Aeropostale" coat, a yellow/green shirt and blue jeans. She is 5'3", 137 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. Police say she may be in need of medical attention.
Anyone who has seen the girl is urged to call Virginia State Police at 1-800-822-4453.

me and my family have known Lemuel and his family for years. He has always been a very kind and gentle man. He has loved his daughter dearly from the day she was born. He would never harm her or interfere with her well being. This act of removing his daughter from this medical facility was not ment to rebell against a system but to protect her from stress and crulty of a system. A system of medical and social. I have had to use the social system and believe me they do not always have the clients best interest in mind. They make terriable choices and mistakes with our lives and we are forced to comply or we WILL NOT receive help. His #1 mistake was going to DSS for medical assisstance concerning Alexis. It's our tax money that is consumed by nonsense behaviors of others rather than helping a physically sick and hard working father getting help with medical expences for a sick daughter. Please, be careful not to judge this father unless you have walked in his shoes. and this is the tru h
