Hey audra the chip is only like $30. know b/c both my dogs have one, and all someone would have to do (if they were honest) is go to their vet to get scanned or the pound. not too hard or expensive...............

Well not only is there nothing saying the dog was allowed to run around loose but, this idea that the dog is dropped off and penned up at the PD is erroneous... These animals are cared for as part of the officer's family - at least I've never heard of it being done any other way. You dont shove them in a kennel and leave them alone at night like a piece of office equipment. The other thing that keeps getting harped on here is chips. Nothing has indicated that the dog doesn't have one. A chip is not a Lojack device or Onstar. It contains information that can be read with the proper device that scans it, same as you would have on a collar tag.. it just can't be slipped off like a collar. I'm sure if James Bond had a dog, he would have some device like some of you are thinking of... but if you want to cry about taxpayer dollars, don't suggest such a thing. You don't want to imagine what it would cost.

Reply to Mike..maybe I missed something, but where was it reported that the dog was "allowed to run loose"? It seems like you are assuming something here, and might not have all the facts. Honestly, mistakes are made; think of how many dogs are lost each day...this one just made the news b/c of it being a police dog. Don't jump to conclusions so quickly! Many a dog have escaped a leash because it was not attached tight enough, or for whatever reason; in other words...AN HONEST MISTAKE...bet you never made any of those before, huh?

Why was this dog allowed to run loose to start with? Sounds like someone(it's police trainer/keeper) thought that they would do as they please instead of keeping this dog in a fenced in area or on a leash as the law says! If they really cared about the dog they wouldn't have let it run free. Nice Job!! If I allowed county property to become lost I would be jailed or fined or both! I'm glad this nice doggy didn't get hit by a car while it was on the run because whoever hit the unrestrained dog would be charged with assault on a police offficer and charged with a felony. As for it's handelers, they need to be fined and made to attend classes on how to obey the laws and keep their dogs in check as the law requires. But we all know that since it was a police officer that would be held responsible, there will be NO DISIPLINARY ACTION !!

I'm glad this story has a happy ending, however what is going on with the story about the two missing girls from Belhaven? I haven't heard anything else about that. If they are still missing why isn't this all over the news?

Iwould be pretty annoyed if someone found my dog and decided to keep it because it was nice. They could have made an effort to find it's owner. My neighbor's dog got out and another neighbor "doing a good deed" had the humane society get the dog. He could have tried a little harder to find the owner. By the time the owner found out the dog was at the humane society, he was already gone. Keeping someone's pet is painful for them and the dog. If you like the dog, get your own dog! I'm sure that it was obvious that this was not a stray or abandoned dog. They weren't just being nice to the dog.

My dog isn't a trained K9 dog and he can be tracked by his tags. I would hope Felix had a collar and tags, too. So why didn't the people that found him try to see whom he belonged to? I know why...they wanted to keep him and didn't realize the publicity this would get. I'm glad he's safe.

I am so glad to hear Felix has been found - I have been so worried about him - thanks to animal lovers he wasn't in harms way - perhaps the couple who found Felix will take a trip to their local animal shelter and give a homeless pup a good loving home.

A happy ending, wonderful!!! So glad Felix is safe :)

You would think the County would want to protect him more by putting a microchip in him, it dont cost a lot.

1st of all why is a 5000 dollar dog tax payers money mind you at the handlers parents house for the holidays and not at the sheriffs dept. if the handler wasnt able to care for him, second of all how'd the dog disappear obviously this 5000 dollar tax payers dog was left outside unattended. why?

It's so good to hear that this story has a happy ending. I am so passionate about animals and it overwhelms me that the dog after missing for a week is safe and sound! Yay Felix!
Yea! Great news this morning!!
I doubt they knew he was a Pitt Co. dog...whatever happened to folks just being good people and taking him in without question from the media? Give it a rest, geez...

Felix has made it home!!!

I saw a black lab (dead) on the side of 40 in Garner/Raleigh (near mile marker 305) yesterday morning. Doubt he would have come this far though.....
poor little doggie, I hope he makes it back home safe!
Who said the dog doesn't have a chip? It's not a freakin' GPS device. lol That requires someone using a scanner on it to get the info for where it belongs.
the dog was staying with the owner's relatives when he got out
[ Report Abuse ]
I am not an officer of the law, buy why do these dogs not have chips? These doges are expensive to train, and maintain, not to mention the family and the officer that loves him.
I hope its not the black lab I saw going home from work today, on River Road. It was accross the street from Smallwood. I just didn't picture the dog going that far away from where it was lost. However, some of us know these dogs can travel a long way to find their keeper. God bless him.
The dog should had a tracker on it. These dogs need them at all times it not on a lease or lock up for their saftey. Some hunting dog do, and I think you should if you care and love your dog.The type of dog that has to roam to do their job should be required to have one on collars. I hope the dog is found. I hate to think he is hurt,or in pain.
I hope he is found safe and sound.
chips are nice if the people that find him have a scanner or know enough to take the dog somewhere it can be scanned.
Maybe they should use this experience and get the K-9's chipped.Do hope they find him.
A collar can be removed.
I hope no one stold the dog for fighting. There are so many sick people around who does dog fighting. I pray this dog didn't get taken by one of these sick o's.

To T in Farmville. Thanks for the info. I just wasn't sure why they lived so far away. I know that most Pitt County deputies live in our county and wasn't sure as to what was going on. I hope and pray that he is found soon. It is way to cold to be out.
What was he doing in Goldsboro... They don't nail the dogs to the floor at the end of the day. :-) They are allowed to travel if the officer needs to go somewhere.
To the one who asked why he was in Goldsboro: Sometimes dogs from neighboring counties are brought in to help with searches. and sometimes dogs are taken to different places outside the county to train in different environments to keep their skills sharp. Could be any of a number of reasons. I hope they find him!
they should have tracking collars on them. it only makes sense.
Hope they find him. Does this deputy live there, that is a long way from Pitt
[ Report Abuse ]
Hope he is found soon. If he is a Pitt County K9 what was he doing in Goldsboro?
I pray for his safe and speedy return. K-9's are very valuable to their departments. Not only is he a partner to someone, he is a friend and family member.
I hope he makes his way back to the PCS Office safe and sound. Felix looks like a smart dog, and I'm sure was loved and cared for, so he ought to return. I pray for his safe return. Such a cutie.
