It may not look like Mike Nifong can fall any further. His law license is lost and his reputation's in tatters. But the disgraced Durham County prosecutor who committed "intentional prosecutorial misconduct" in his pursuit of the Duke Lacrosse rape case faces an uncertain -- and likely troubled -- future.
The falsely accused players and their families have racked up millions of dollars in legal bills. They appear likely to file civil lawsuits against the disbarred prosecutor. Their attorneys want a judge to consider holding Nifong in criminal contempt for lying to the court.
Defense attorney Joseph Cheshire represented one of the lacrosse players. He says some people will think further action against Nifong is "mean-spirited and kicking somebody when they're down."
But Cheshire believes the issue carries significant precedent and that a judge should decide the matter.
