Firefighters battled a two fires in the Pisgah National Forest that were started by lightning two days earlier.
The U-S Forest Service says one of the fires had burned more than 250 acres at Dobson Knob, about three miles north of Lake James. The other fire, about six miles away at Shortoff Mountain, had burned about 125 acres on the east side of Linville River within the Linville Gorge Wilderness.
No injuries were reported and no private lands or homes were threatened as the fires burned on national forest lands in Burke County.
More than 130 firefighters were battling the blazes with more expected at the sites.
Officials did not have an expected time for containment, saying conditions were particularly bad because of hot, dry weather.
