The Future Of Bible Classes In Pender County Uncertain

Elective Bible classes in Pender County high schools face an uncertain future.

The school board there has voted to review the status of the
classes because the teachers aren't licensed to teach high school
and they're not paid by the school system. The instructors are all local pastors whose stipends are paid by local clergy organizations.

Pender County Superintendent Ted Kaniuka says the board is trying to keep the popular classes in at least some high schools this fall. He says some changes are coming to the structure of the classes and the curriculum. He says it's important to make sure the curriculum isn't promoting any one religion.

Similar classes were canceled in New Hanover schools.
