A fire this past weekend claimed one woman and injured another in Tyrrell County.

Dead is Jeannie Roughton of Columbia. Authorities say around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night they received a 911 call of a fire on Highway 94 South.

A deputy tried to get inside the home, but was kept back because of extreme heat and heavy smoke. After the fire department arrived, rescue personnel attempted to revive the victim, but the 35-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Chowan Hospital.

The victim's mother, 57-year-old Sue Roughton was also transported to Chowan Hospital for burns.

Authorities say they believe the cause of the deadly fire to be from an electrical problem.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with ms. roughton when she had back surgery 2 wks ago and she seemed to be so loving & sweet. I assisted her with anything that she needed (which wasn't much) and we would conversate about girly things but she was just so friendly. She talked about her 3 children, her "special" friend, and her mother. We also talked about her "smell good" lotions that she had with her. She was discharged on 12/4/09 & I didn't get to see her before she left because I was assisting other patients but she proved to be a really good person. My heart goes out to her children, mom, "special" friend, and all who knew her. I ask that God will give you the strength that is needed to make it through this difficult time. May we find comfort in Christ knowing that all is well & He will guide us through. May Jeannie rest in peace. Hallelujah!
