Work to relieve the train versus traffic tie-ups in Greenville means one railroad crossing is shutting down, for good.

Greenville City officials say the railroad crossing on South Pitt Street, located between 14th Street and Wyatt Street in Greenville will be permanently closed, as of Monday.

This section of South Pitt Street will no longer function as a through street. The reason, crews are starting on the new rail connecting track. Officials say drivers will be able to use Beatty Street and Evans Street for access to Howell Street and 14th Street.

If greenville would spend more money on fixing streets and widening ... instead of painting the town seal at the intersection of Hooker Rd and Greenville Blvd or laying down brick crosswalks things at the above intersection then things would be better. Seems like everytime I see someone who needs a ticket ... driving too slow, texting and driving or otherwise holding up traffic there are no traffic cops around.

Think about this--if you are a patient, riding in the back of an ambulance, in need of urgent care and on your way to PCMH, would you like to know that your care may have been held up on account of a stupid train? Train traffic through towns SHOULD go the way of the dinosaur.

When it costs on average close to $9,000 per year to own and operate a car, I agree we are wasting funds! I wish Greenville would build a better infrastructure so that it would be safer to walk and ride around town. More speed bumps, lowering the limits, more lanes, and closing more streets would be some great first steps. We should also ask for higher gas prices and smaller parking lots-or at least charge people for parking instead of making everyone pay for it with higher retail prices. It is the way of the future and we need to get off oil and stop allowing our soldiers to be killed for our lower gas prices.
