Safety Comes First For Truckers Carrying Logs

That's the number of total trips log truck drivers for Weyerhaeuser, the largest timber company in Eastern Carolina make on an average day. Wednesday as part of a safety campaign we had the chance to ride along with a log truck driver as he carried a load of timber. The maximum load allowed by law is eighty thousand pounds. Hefty cargo that means the driver of the log truck is charged with a tremendous responsibility when it comes to safety. But highway patrol says drivers of cars also carry that burden of safety. Troopers tell us they often see people cut log truck drivers off, stop short and travel too close. All things highway patrol leads to accidents. Log truck drivers undergo special training and have to follow strict safety regulations for things like weight, brakes on their vehicle and securing the logs onto the bed of the truck.
