A man authorities say was driving a vehicle that caused a fatal wreck during rush hour is being held in Raleigh on a one million dollar bond because they say he's an illegal immigrant and a flight risk.
A Wake District Court judge refused to lower the bond for the man who told troopers he was Michael Caldera De Latorre.
Immigration authorities say his fingerprints suggest his real name is Ricardo Contreras, who was arrested twice in 2004 for trying to illegally cross into the United States.
The man is charged with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle and two felony counts of serious injury by motor vehicle. He was charged after a sports utility vehicle crossed the median of Interstate 40 early Monday and hit a vehicle, killing 54-year-old George Smith of Cary.
