Progress Energy To Delay Nuclear Plant

One of the major utilities serving North and South Carolina says it will delay expanding a nuclear power plant near Raleigh. Instead, Progress Energy says it will urge customers to use less electricity.

Progress Energy executives say the company also will observe a moratorium on building new coal-fired plants.

The company says it will spend two years testing whether its one-point-two million customers will become energy efficient.

Progress had wanted add a generator at its Shearon Harris nuclear plant south of Raleigh. But officials say they will spend a year deciding whether to take that step.
