Hickory School Locked Down After Bear Sighting

A bear sighting in Hickory led to the lockdown of a nearby elementary school.

Students were ordered off the playground and taken in the building yesterday after a man called police about seeing a bear run through his yard.

The bear sighting happened at about the time school was being dismissed for the day.

Police officers did --not-- find the bear.

School officials say they didn't want to take any chances. Parents were called and asked to pick up students.

Black bear sightings have been common this spring as the animals look for food in populated areas. An Easter freeze killed off some of the bears' food supply.
