Two beaches will have lifeguards this year on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, where seven people drowned last year.
The lifeguards begin work today on Coquina Beach south of Nags Head and on Ocracoke Island just north of ramp 70.
National Park Service Chief Ranger Norah Martinez says they will work from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Buxton has had lifeguards in the past, but didn't have candidates this year.
Lifeguards once watched over as many as ten beaches along the 70 miles of shoreline on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Those jobs were cut as budgets decreased.
