Another bear attack on a family dog in Asheville.
A 20-pound dachshund-beagle mix was attacked by an angry mother bear with three cubs nearby. The bear ripped open sections of the dog's hindquarters.
Veterinarians stitched up the wounds and sent Miz (Ms.) Wiggles home with a tube implanted to drain fluid as the injuries healed.
Owner Andrea Hunnicutt says the dog's injuries would have been much worse had her other dog --not-- joined in the fight and driven back the bear.
Bear attacks on family dogs have been occurring this spring in part because a late freeze destroyed some of the bears' food sources. The animals have been showing up in residential areas to scavenge for something to eat.
The recent attacks include a mother bear with cubs killing two dogs outside a home.
