Democratic state Treasurer Richard Moore plans to announce today that he's running for governor.
Moore's campaign says it has planned the announcement for 5 p-m at J-F Webb High School in Oxford.
The 46-year-old Moore is expected to be challenged for the Democratic nomination by Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue, who hasn't formally entered the race. Three Republicans already have announced they will seek the G-O-P nomination.
Governor Mike Easley is barred by state law from seeking another term.
Moore is a native of Granville County and has been state treasurer since 2000. He also has been a federal prosecutor, a state legislator and was state secretary of crime control and public safety.
