Group Says House Of Raeford Cruel To Turkeys

An animal rights group says turkeys were mistreated at a large processing plant in Hoke County.

Mercy for Animals says an undercover investigation shows practices at the House of Raeford Farms slaughterhouse exceeded what's allowed by food processing regulations. The allegations include ripping the heads off life birds and pulling eggs out of them to toss around.

Nathan Runkle is executive director of the Columbus, Ohio-based group. He says they're sending the results to the Hoke County district attorney.

The Raleigh News and Observer says House of Raeford officials did --not-- respond to requests for comment.
