A newspaper says that the best courtroom for a speeder is that of William "Pete" Hunter. The Guilford County District Court judge holds the state's record for letting lead-footed drivers off the hook.
The News & Observer says Hunter gave twice as many passes to motorists charged with high speed driving between January 2002 and
June 2006 as any other judge in North Carolina.
Hunter says he takes speeding seriously.
An examination of records shows Hunter is lenient with drivers clocked in excess of 100 miles per hour, granting leniency in 73 such cases. In some instances the drivers already had several speeding tickets.
